HISTORY OF ALBEMARLE

REA.
The name of Rea is found in the county at the time of its formation. In 1747
Fergus Rea bought a portion of the Chiswell patent on Rockfish. About the same
time John Rea was the owner of land on the Rivanna near Martin King's Ford, the
present Union Mills. Whether these persons were related to those hereafter mentioned,
does not appear.
Andrew, Thomas and Samuel Rea were considerably interested in real estate during
a period extending from 1744 to 1788. At the first of these dates, Andrew entered
a small tract on the south side of the Rivanna, a short distance above the mouth
of Ivy Creek, and at the time was the owner of land adjoining. Beyond doubt he
gave name to the ford so called, though it should be written Rea, not Ray; in
the patent it is written Reay. Thomas owned land on the head waters of Mechum's
near Round Mountain, and subsequently purchased in the vicinity of Rea's Ford,
and on Meadow Creek, not far from the old Poor House. Samuel also had a place
near Rea's Ford, and in 1788 bought on Beaver Creek between Crozet and Whitehall.
All three were married, the name of Andrew's wife being Mary, that of Thomas's
Ursula, and that of Samuel's Jane, daughter of Daniel Maupin and his wife, Margaret
Via. These persons, it is likely, were brothers. Samuel's children were Daniel,
Andrew, Thomas, Robert, and Margaret, the wife of Ezekiel McCauley. Robert married
Elizabeth, daughter of Daniel Maupin and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Dabney, lived
in the Beaver Creek neighborhood, and died in 1831. In a report of Bernard Brown
of persons listed to work on the roads near the foot of Buck's Elbow in 1792,
Andrew and Thomas Rea are mentioned; and in an order of Court on the same subject
made in 1823, occur the names of Robert, Thomas and Bland.
Thomas, the third son of Samuel, lived beneath Buck's Elbow, and died in 1850.
His wife was Ann, daughter of Bland Ballard, and his children Daniel, Jane, the
wife of Garland Maury, Bland, Jemima, the wife of Richard Beckett, Ann, the
wife of John Bales, Samuel, and Margaret, the wife of George Wolfe. Bland married
Sarah Alexander, and secondly Elizabeth, daughter of Colonel John Jones. In his
youth he was associated with Benjamin Ficklin in the manufacture of tobacco,
but afterwards settled as a farmer near the old homestead, and died in 1868.
His children were John A., Joseph, William, James, Mary, the wife of Bernard
Tilman, and Maria, the wife of Oscar Lipscomb.

The Story of Gabriel and Marie Maupin by Dorothy Shaffett: ...dughter of Micajah
Via and _ Burnett. Michajah Via was the son of William Via. The emigrant, Wm.
Via, was the grandfather according to Dr. Socretes Maupin, hence Micajah Via
must have been the nephew of Mafgaret Via Maupin. there is some little doubt
as to the emigrant Via's name. He is commonly sopken of as "William",
but Dr. Maupin usese the name "William" but once and then only with
a question mark. In the Register of St. Peter's Parish (which once included Hanover
the home of the Via's) are the following entries: - "Judith, Dau. of Amer
Via baptiz, the 11 Aprill. Margaret, Dauter of Amer Via baptiz 3 Aug 1701. Mary,
daut of Amer Via Baptiz. 17 Febry 1703/1" Inasmuch as Mararet Via, wife
of Daniel Maupin, was born in 1701, it seems that she and the above named Margaret
might be one and the same person.Death between 1708 - 1711 Came to Jamestown,

(120) Linda Jarman: I remember the night that my Great-grandfather
died. My father had connected a buzzer up to his house below us for him to use
if he needed us. The first night that he used it scared me because it was located
right outside my bedroom window and my window was open. My parents ran down to
his house to check on him and found that he had a small heart attack. Several
days later my mother went down to sit with him (we all did this daily as he was
a favorite of all of us). He told her at that time he had had 3 ladies, dressed
in black come to see him that day and said they would be back in a couple of
days. These ladies would have walked passed our house to get to his because he
said he saw them walk down the hill (Grandpa loved to sit on his back porch and
watch things). The night that he died he was in his bedroom (actually on his
chamber pot as he did not have running water or electricity in his house - he
and my Uncle Frank heated and cooked by wood stoves). He rang his buzzer but
was gone before my parents could get down the hill. My mother said he died with
a smile on his face. He was buried on 13 Jul 1962 in Crozet, Albemarle, Virginia.

Linda Jarman: Grandpa was a wonderful person (but because of the run down condition
of his home many of my class mates were afraid of him - for one thing they had
heard that he was mean but that was a mistake (it was Mr. Snead that lived next
to us that was the one everyone thought he was - he had become senile and would
sit out on his porch with a shot gun and shoot at anyone who came by - he died
when I was a child so I never saw this but my mother told me about it). My great
grandfather was a very kind hearted man and very humble. He walked with his Lord
and shared with those around him. He had memorized much of the scripture through
the years and taught Sunday School for several years at the local Methodist church.
But stopped doing that when they got upset about him not joining the church,
he stopped going then but never stopped loving his Lord. He was a man of great
wisdom, both in practical life and in knowledge. I use to love sitting with him
in his house by the wood stove - talking with him about history (he gave both
my brother and I a love of history). I would sit in the rocker by the stove,
he in his chair under the window drumming his fingers (to the point that it wore
into the wood of the chair (I still have both chairs). I loved to take my friends
over to meet him (and he loved them). Grandpa was special to all members of his
family but especially to us since we lived just above him. He owned and operated
his farm and raised Apples and peaches when he was younger and was a justice
of the court for many years. He and his wife raised my mother until she was 5,
when my great grandmother died. From that time on her special times were the
summer when she went to stay with Grandpa and Uncle Frank. When she was 16 she
again came to live with them. When he died we all felt great loss as he was so
much a part of our lives. He was married to Cornelia Ann
Layne on 5 Nov 1894 in Albemarle, Virginia.
